Picking paint finishes for Queensland humidity (flat, low-sheen or semi-gloss?)

The finish you choose decides whether your walls survive three wet summers or need a repaint by next February, room by room, here's the logic.

Half the repaint jobs we fix failed because someone chose the finish by what looked nice on the tin, not what survives 80% humidity. Sheen level isn't a style choice in Brisbane: it's a durability decision.

Flat / matte: ceilings and nothing else

Flat hides imperfections beautifully, which is why it goes on ceilings, nobody touches a ceiling, so the fragility doesn't matter. On walls in a humid climate it's a sponge for handprints and it can't be washed without burnishing. One kid, one wet dog, one summer: done.

Low-sheen: the workhorse for living areas

Bedrooms, living rooms, hallways: low-sheen is where Brisbane walls should live. It forgives the cracks and patches older unit walls collect, wipes clean without polishing up shiny, and doesn't flash under downlights the way gloss does. This is our default on almost every job: see what a full repaint involves on our painting page.

Semi-gloss: wet zones and trim only

Bathrooms, laundries, and anywhere steam lives, semi-gloss sheds moisture and lets you actually scrub mould off before it roots. Same for skirting, doors and architraves, where it earns its keep in scrubbability. Put it on a whole wall and you'll stare at every roller mark forever.

The mould-resistant question

Bathroom paint with mould inhibitor: worth it? Yes, but with a caveat: it slows mould, it doesn't prevent it. If your bathroom gets mouldy it's a ventilation problem first, a paint problem second. Paint over live mould without fixing the airflow and you're just delaying the return by a few months.

Pick the paint for the room's worst day, a February afternoon with the windows shut, not its best.

The quick reference

  • Ceilings: flat, everywhere, no debate.
  • Living/bedrooms: low-sheen, washable range.
  • Bathrooms/laundry: semi-gloss with mould inhibitor.
  • Skirting/doors/trim: semi-gloss enamel.
  • Kitchen splashback wall: semi-gloss or a proper splashback, paint near a cooktop needs to scrub.

Unsure what your walls need? We bring physical swatches to every quote visit: photos lie about sheen worse than they lie about colour.
